AN INTRODUCTION

Yogi Shri S. N. Tavaria

Shri Tavariajli met his master, Shri Ram, when he was only seven years old. Over a period of 12 years he learnt the practices of a very secret Yoga System from his teacher. He said that this system was passed from master to disciples in Guru- Shisya parampara, originating from Maharshi Patanjali who is credited with the authorship of the Yoga-Sutras.

Shri Tavariaji condensed the system into a few simple exercises together with the three step rhythmic breath, so that the benefits of such a rich system of Yoga could be easily available to every one. His teacher advised him to be a householder, so he lived a family man throughout and is survived by his wife and two children. He said that the real test of Yoga is in a normal family life.

Shri Tavariaji had two engineering degrees and two degrees of Master of Arts.

He had a tremendous control over his body-brain system brought about by Yoga practices. Even though he ate only three meals a week. He was able to lead a normal and very active life.
He has written two valuable books:

1)       Yoga Sutra- Explanation and Exposition

2)       The Purpose of Birth and Death.

Moreover, he has left a tremendous amount of notes
He Left his Physical Body at the age of 76 years

I met Shri Tavariaji in 1988 and very soon my whole life started revolving around him. Till he left his physical body in 1994, not a day passed without some kind of connection with him. It was as if I was a small child learning how to walk by catching someone's hand.

Never have I met a more simple and unassuming human being. And his simplicity was a kind of living poetry. The way he did the normal day to day acts of life, had the beauty, purpose and creativity of a painter spraying his canvass with his innumerable colours.

}That he was a teacher of the deepest Yogic sciences was hidden in his simple approach to life. And the teaching is so simple, but so complete and scientific. It weaves its way
into our daily normal life without upsetting it in the least. And as we continue the practices and the rhythmic breath (as shown in the book) diligently, one day, the transformation happens.
Shri Tavariaji said that every student has his real guide or teacher in himself. If you follow the practices with intensity and regularity as Shri Tavariaji would say, ''as if white hot heat", then one day this inner teacher will reveal himself and guide the student to the very heart of Yoga.

It is with this purpose, that a few excerpts of Shri Tavariaji's teachings are given here for interested students. I hope that it will give the student a basic outline and a glimpse of Shri Tavariaji's deeply revealing Yogic science.

Date: 02/03/1997-                                                                                                                                  - A STUDENT

The main purpose of the 3 SRB rhythm is the synchronizing of the prana intake in the astral body to intake of breath in the physical body. This is done mainly by doing three step rhythmic breathing for all twenty four hours. Achieving this is a long journey and there are many obstacles on the way. The main obstacles are the emotional granthis or knots which have formed in the astral body. The astral body is a body of fine energies or pranas which have the quality of emotions and that is why negative emotions can create blocks. These granthis have been formed by the collection of negative emotions and their memory patterns over very long periods of time (not only this life, but birth after birth after birth...). Granthi means a deeply embedded negative pattern which keeps on repeating in our actions. Just as a block in the physical body leads to blockage in the circulation of blood, on the astral level these granthis are like blocks to the free flow of prana. Further they tinge the prana with an emotional color, so the pranas flowing in the astral remain of a very low quality. Now these granthis form at certain specific places, connected with energy centers or nerve plexuses (chakras), in the astral -this leads to disease or illness manifesting in the physical at that same corresponding area. The granthi creates disease.

Tavariaji said that the astral is the primary body. But at present the astral is only primary in the sense that it creates disease in the physical body (that it is definitely primary, but in a NEGATIVE sense). Tavariaji also said that all diseases had their roots in the astral.

It becomes apparent that in our effort to synchronise the physical with the astral, these granthis must be removed or dissolved. Further, quality of pranas in the astral must be upgraded and nerve plexuses (chakras) or energy centers must be able to work in a steady rhythm, the right speed and producing the correct amounts of psychic energies. Further these plexuses (chakras) and energy centers, with their upgraded energies should become the primary factor for the working of the physical body. When this happens, the astral in the real sense becomes the primary body (in the evolutionary sense).

It is with all this in view that Shri Tavariaji, designed the refining exercises. Not only are they scientific yoga practices but they are designed in a particular order so as the refining proceeds, the granthis dissolve, the higher energies start circulating and they finally lead you to the throat center and end there. As we shall see, this is the area where we create the energy for communication. Thus the refining exercises take the student to an area where he can be further guided by communication from another dimension. Each exercise is done with a particular area of the physical body and this area in turn is connected to the granthis and plexuses (chakras) at the astral level. So when the granthi and the emotional debris is cleared at a particular area, only then the emotional energies relevant to that area get upgraded.

Example :- Jealousy and anger could be upgraded to love and compassion. Also, by dissolving the granthi on the astral level, we begin to cure the disease or illness which manifested because of the granthi.

The first three exercises are done at the 3 SRB rhythm but at a faster speed (36 cycles/minute) This in effect
1) the rapid rhythm dissolves the granthi .

2) the same rhythm is able to extract higher energies or pranas from the air and make them circulate in the area of the astral at 36 cycles a minute.

These energies which are otherwise not available help to start certain higher functions in the Body Brain system.  Before going any further let us summarize. These exercises help to
1) Remove the obstacles which prevent the synchronization of the astral and the physical bodies.
2) Helps create higher emotional energies by transforming the lower ones or refining them.
3) Provide the energy for certain plexuses (chakras) and energy centers for the astral to start functioning.
4) To lead us to that stage I. area I ground where an inner communication for guidance is possible.

Now let us understand the astral and the physical and what it really means to make the astral primary (in the inner evolutionary sense). The human structure consists of seven or eight recognizable systems, supported by a skeletal framework and bound into solid whole by connective tissues. These systems are united and harmonized by the life maintaining action of the heart upon which depends the very existence of the organism as an individual. Each system covers the entire body and governing all these systems is a system called the endocrine system, which is made up of certain glands of internal secretion, usually in pairs. Each gland is set in a particular place and overlooks a particular system. It individually presides over the system as a regulator and transformer of energy needed for the working of the system i.e. this gland transforms the general life produced by the organism from FOOD, AIR and INCOMING IMPULSES -to the tension required for that system to work.

Shri Tavariaji said that each endocrine gland is a poor counterpart of something higher in the astral, what we call chakras so each endocrine gland is sensitive to or associated with an energy center or plexus (chakra) in the astral.

It is these centers which give higher substances required so that the related endocrine gland can secrete in us the chemicals which lead to a higher quality of awareness., emotions and understanding. Only when this happens. does the astral become primary in the real sense of terms. But at present in the areas -of the nerve plexuses (chakras) we have created granthis. These granthis do not allow the energy centre or nerve plexuses (chakras) to work properly. On the contrary they lead to repetitive negative emotions and because they are counterparts of the endocrine glands these granthis with the negative emotions induce the glands to secrete poisonous chemicals in the body. This then leads to tension in the physical body and manifests in ailments and diseases.

Example :- If there is an emotion of jealousy, the granthis involved will make the related endocrine gland secrete incorrectly (digestive juices secreted when no food is eaten or less or no secretion when food is eaten) which can lead to rheumatism and arthritis. Thus the granthis do not allow the glands to function in a balanced and harmonious manner leading to over or under secretion of each gland and so creating or releasing poisonous chemicals in the blood stream. So, on the one hand we have to dissolve the granthis and the negative emotions for the energy centers to work properly and on . the other hand the centers require a higher quality of prana to work which . must be produced in the astral. As we ~aw in our last few meetings the astral takes in only one kind of food directly i.e. incoming impulses.

Apart from that it also gets the needed higher energies from the physical food we eat and the air we breathe. Three step rhythmic breathing plays a very important role in helping the astral extract maximum energies from the air, which is why 3 SRB alone can be responsible for providing the higher energy for the astral centers to work.

So on one side we have an astral energy c endocrine gland. As long as the pranas circulating are of the lower grade there is not much need of communication b have been refined and upgraded a different be established between the astral and the will involve the regeneration of the parasy. The nervous system in our bodies is divided into three separate sub-systems :

1) The CEREBRO-SPINAL which serves the conscious functions of the body brain system.

2) The SYMPATHETIC which stimulates the unconscious or instinctive functions.

3) The PARA-SYMPATHETIC (VAGUS) which slows down the instinctive functions and compliments them.

Shri Tavariaji said, " The first step is co-ordination i.e. synchronizing the prana intake of the astral with the breath intake of the physical the second step is communication." In our talks on pause we saw how communication with the higher or astral center of the brain takes place. Apart form the centers in the brain there are minor brains or chakras which have communication with the glands. The establishing of communications I in both the minor brain or brain centers, involves the working of the para- sympathetic system. Further, like we have physical or psychological nerve pathways throughout the body-there exist a more subtle system. of energetic passageways called nadis. These nadis at present are blocked with emotional debris. For the para-sympathetic system to be activated, these nadis must be cleansed and strengthened. 'Nadi Shuddhi' holds a very important place in Hatha yoga practices. As we shall see later, exercise number four cleanses the nadis and exercise number five ignites the parasympathetic. Once the nadis are cleansed and strengthened they are capable of withstanding the high voltage energies with which the parasympathetic works.

Shri Tavariaji said, "Of the two principal nervous system one is subconscious and animal and the other is sub-conscious but human. This latter is expected to fully function in some near evolutionary future. Can we generate this system and make use of it today?"

Before we go into each exercise it is best to remember that TAVARIAJI always said that these exercises were not just exercises but are vulnerable techniques and should be done with the attitude of worship i.e. keeping their higher purpose in mind.

So aright attitude and inner posture is most important while doing these exercises.

PRACTICALS

 GO TO EXERCISE   1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,

REFINING EXERCISE NO 1 - This Exercise Deals with the Area of the Heart and the Lungs.

Method :
Take deep and false breaths at the speed of 36 breaths per minute along with the musical rhythm by placing both the hands (palms) on the chest. Be attentive the chest should go out while inhaling and it should go in while exhaling, and the others parts of body should not move. The entire breath is restricted only in chest / Lungs area.

Time limit :
Maximum on minute in the beginning. Once you are comfortable with a minute increase by about ¼ to ½ a minute per month till you reach 3 minutes.
* Please note that the duration should not be extended beyond 3 minutes.

Benefits : Physical.

1. Problems connected with the lungs. As we grow older the lungs get stuck at the upper part due to non-use. By doing these exercises these are opened up and breathing. Blood flow etc., is free, thus curing asthmatics and respiratory problems such as wet lungs.

2. This is the area of the heart, this exercise therefore remedies all kinds of heart aliments such as week heart, blocked arteries, valve problems etc., it helps regulate the flow of blood. From the heart oxygenated blood reaches every cell in the body. Each cell has its organic memory as Tavariyaji used to say this memory at present is f conflict .so by doing this exercise at the 3SRB rhythm, blood from the heart imbibes this rhythm and transports it to each cell of the body. This rhythm is then slowly taken up by the organic memory of each cell and where there is rhythm conflict cannot exist. So in this way the first exercise ensures good overall health of the body.

Benefits : Emotional.
This is the area of the magical quality we call love, but before that this is also the area where the ego (I Consciousness) is born. And love would mean transcendence of Ego. This ego starts from birth ever since a name is given to a person. Then everything starts revolving around that name Ex. My name, My Family, My House, etc…. Satisfying of this ego becomes the central point of our lives. Everything revolves round it, which in turn leads to self-centeredness. Manipulation of others, power-gathering etc., Because of this we cannot love, because to love we must have the will to love. We can therefore say that this is the area where will is also born.

 GO TO EXERCISE   1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,

REFINING EXERCISE NO 2 - This Exercise Deals with the Area of the Solar Plexus.

Method :
Put both the hands (palms) on the stomach, at the upper part of the navel. In this exercise the upper portion of the stomach above the navel should be light. Take deep and swift breath along with the musical rhythm at the speed of 36 breaths per minutes, as done in exercise no. 1. Be attentive that the stomach should go out while inhaling and should go in while exhaling the entire breath is restricted only to stomach, abdomen area.

Time Limit :
Maximum on minute in the beginning.  Once you are comfortable with a minute increase by about ¼ to ½ a minute per month till you reach 3 minutes.

* Please note that the duration should not be extended beyond 3 minutes.

Benefits :
Physical
This is the area where the digestive fire is created, so the proper creation of this ensures general health and toning up the abdominal glands.  Intestinal peristalsis movement is toned, so the passage of food becomes easy and we do not suffer from constipation. There are many other organs and glands in this area which get massaged by this exercise. The Kidney, Liver, pancreas, spleen etc… The pancreas are not exactly and endocrine gland but have group of cells called islets of Langerhans which have endocrine tendencies and produce a ascertain called insulin which digests sugar. They also produce valuable digestive juices and play an important role in calming or neutralizing the production of adrenaline. On each kidney is small gland called the Adrenal Gland? They produce adrenaline, which is important for self-preservation. All the gleans are massaged and toned by this exercise.

Emotional :
If the adrenaline gleans are not working properly, it leads to passive, moody and depressed introspective ‘ Types’. If the pancreas is not complementing the adrenaline glands properly, it leads to impulsive nature, irritability and anger. But the proper and balanced working of both gives vitality to a lethargic person and tranquility to an overly anxious person. Further, the pancreas is like a sponge as far as negative emotions are concerned, absorbing and holding them, which makes them repeat all the time, thus creating a granthi In this area. This is also the area of Power (According to the Chinese, chi energy is generated here.) But this power must be positive, which can only happen when we overcome the granthi of fear. Most Importantly this is the area of

[A] INSTINCTIVE FEAR

[B] LOWER ANIMAL NATURE

 GO TO EXERCISE   1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,

REFINING EXERCISE NO 3 - This Exercise Deals with the Area of the BackBone, Pelvic Girdle and the Knees.

Method :
Stretch the legs and hold the toes by fingers of both the hands. If the fingers do not reach up to the toes, hold the Ankle - Joints. The legs should remain straight and should not bend at the knees and the head should remain straight up. Take deep and swift breaths with musical rhythm at the speed of 36 breaths per minute. As per former exercises. In this exercise we take a complete breath i.e. breath is not restricted to anyone area but it is a complete breath. The entire chest/stomach and abdomen area is used.

Time Limit :
Maximum on minute in the beginning. Once you are comfortable with a minute increase by about ¼ to ½ a minute per month till you reach 3 minutes.
* Please note that the duration should not be extended beyond 3 minutes.

Benefits : Physical
The main area that this third exercises touches is backbone, the pelvic girdle and the knees. A strong and flexible spinal cord makes us sit straight and walk tall. This helps us walk through the ups and downs of life and when we cannot sit straight, we let the tension and heaviness of life overburdens us. Two inches on either side of the spinal cord we accumulate tensions. These tensions are the result of two predominant emotions, jealousy and anger. Both these areas and when the condition becomes chronic lead to rheumatism and arthritis. Further, the tensions accumulated on either side of the spinal cord slowly weaken the spine leading to ailments of the back such as spondylites, slip disk, degeneration of lumber vertebra etc.
When this exercise is done at the 3SRB rhythm (36 Cycle) we start dissolving the acids that have accumulated at various places in the body. The backbone becomes free of tension thus curing the aliments. The backbone once again performs its most important and natural function that of shock absorbers for the body. The exercise helps to remove the abdominal disorders, stimulates and tones the plexuses (chakras) in the lower part of the body, and the most important of which is the perineum.

Emotional :
Both the emotions of Jealousy and Anger play a predominant role in our lives. Over a period of time this exercise transforms these emotions and we find that we are free of both these negative emotions. Tavariyaji said "this excercise is like a vacuum cleaner for the backbone (Sushumna Nadi) and by doing it we pump air up and down our backbone, thus cleansing the sushmna nadi, so that the higher energy of regeneration can rise in it ".
Yoga as that perineum Gravity is the determining factor of the energy, therefore when we sit on the ground this energy gathers at whatever points that touch the ground. So by spreading our legs in front of us, we are giving more space to this energy and by the 3SRB rhythm we refine this energy. This energy is connected with the points of regeneration namely , Muldhara and Swadhisthana and it keeps us rooted to the realities of life.
As we said earlier, this exercise indirectly stimulates and tones the plexuses (chakras) in the lower parts of the body. Shri Tavariaji said, " The first master cell created by the meeting of the male sperm and the female ova split into two. On an astral level, this became the muladhara and swadhisthana " The Muldhara is in the perineum and Shri Tavaiaji further said "the first step is the regeneration of the perineum " (Jesus said that the first is also the last)

The Cerbor-Spinal fluid and the spinal fluid are one and the same. The fluid is created in the choroid plexus, which is located in the lining of the ventricle of the brain. It is maid due to the activity transportation of ions, especially sodium, across the special epithelial membrane of chord plexus. So because of the active transportation of sodium, water follows passively by osmosis. The basic medically proved function of this fluid is to act as shock absorbers.

 GO TO EXERCISE   1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,

REFINING EXERCISE NO 4 - This Exercise Deals with the Area of the Backbone, Pelvic Girdle and the Knees.

Method :
Stucco breathing : Five shor, Quick inhalations totaling on full breath, followed by one forceful exhalation through the mouth emptying the lungs, completely.

Time Limit :
Start with three repetitions, gradually increase by 1 or 2 repetitions every fortnight of longer (Depending on how comfortable the performance feels) until the exercise can be continued for three minutes. Please do not extend beyond this time.

Benefits : Physical
This exercise improves the blood circulation by getting rid of blockages in the circulation, which keeps us free from skin problems, varicose, veins etc… so the better the circulation the better is our health. Also on the physical level, there is transmission of electricity via circulation of nervous impulses through the nerves. Due to muscle tension in the body. (Which has May causes, some of which are on a much deeper level), these impulses get blocked, the direct result of which is the accumulation of static electricity in the muscles. This in turn leads to involuntary working of the muscles or also the spasms. (It may even result in paralysis.) Therefore the smoother and better the blood circulation, the lesser the muscular tension in our body.
By breathing in installments and to the full, we are improving the elasticity and capacity of the lungs. Like the first exercise this exercise also helps heart and asthma patients. It also helps in training the lung for certain essential higher pranayama practices at a later stage on the path of yoga.
The body has its own electromagnetic field and the health of the body is reflected in this field. The stronger the field the better is the health of our body. This exercise also helps us increase our sensitivity to blood; the more powerful is our body magnetic field and in turn our vitality and health. Many adepts have used this technique of becoming deeply sensitive to their blood circulation, thereby creating vary powerful and attractive magnetic personalities.
Finally, the cells of the brain vibrate with this exercise, which helps enhance and improve our memory also ensures general vitality and well being of the brain.

Emotional :
The astral counterparts of the nerves are in yoga literature called nadies. "Nadi" literally means channel for the flow of emotional energy of prana. The vital forces of prana flow along them (amperage) and they have to be trained to withstand higher pressures (Voltage). This exercise helps increase our level of awareness so that on can starts extracting higher quality of prana from the incoming impuls. Without this exercise the nadis will not be capable of withstanding these high presures and the body / Brain system will totally break down, leading to an imbalance.
What is flowing in the nadis is prana , or has been extract from incoming impulses. But the incoming impulses are dependent upon [1] Structure (vibratinal tone) and conjoined with [2] identical memory pattern (sanskara). Thus experiential memory too is flowing through the nadis and this experiential memory we call prana. Now in all of us this experiential memory (pattern) is blocked as it is reinforced by memory patterns, and education, our upbringing are all-conducive to creating blocks. These blocks disturb the flow of porana. Which in turn blocks the flow of nervous impulse leads to muscular tension , depression hypertension, blood pressure problems , emotional imbalance, and could also lead to nervous breakdown and paralysis.
Also, it is this debris of million of years of experiential history (memory) flowing in the prana which makes our psychic nature. This singes all our negative emotions and makes us animals in human form. By doing this exercise, during the forceful exhalation you are throwing our millions of year of emotional debris thereby upgrading your psychic nature. So to conclude, as the forth-refining exercise is directly connected with flow it removes obstacles to flow at all levels blood, impulses prana and memory.

  GO TO EXERCISE   1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,

REFINING EXERCISE NO 5 - This Exercise Oxygenates the Blood, Adds a little Carbon - Dioxide CO2 into the Blood Stream, and activates the Parasympathetic Nervous System.

Method :
Square breathing [1] Inhale for 3 seconds [2] Retain (Breath) for 3 seconds [3] Exhale (Breath out) for 3 seconds (4) Keep (Breath out) for 3 seconds.
Slowly increase duration to 5 seconds.

Time Limit :
Start with three repetitions, gradually increase by 1 or 2 repetitions every fortnight of longer (Depending on how comfortable the performance feels) until the exercise can be continued for three minutes. Please do not extend beyond this time.

Benefits : Physical
Yoga says that when you hold your breath for three seconds the blood is oxygenated. Which makes you feel more alive, sensitive a vibrant. When you hold the breath for a further two seconds, it adds a little CO2 not the CO2 already within us which is released by the cells as debris in the venal blood, but CO2 acts as a natural antibiotic which keeps us healthy and free from minor aliments such as colds, fever etc. This holding the breath in and out slows the respiration and the pulse rate. It activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which has a calming effect on the whole, body. When we are born the parasympathetic nervous system is working at a small percentage of its full capacity, which is necessary/enough to neutralize the excess secretions of the endocrine glands. This keeps us free from anger, irritation etc. which age the parasympathetic nearly stops working ad thus a lot of irritation and anger flows/resides in our system due to imbalance secretion) Adrenaline). By holding this exercise we reignite the parasympathetic and
thus ensure balance in the body/brain system.

Emotional :
At a psychological level, we live in A constant State of active-reaction. The direct result of this is a constant state of irritation. Irritation is a fuse which releases and wastes very fine psychic energy. After too much irritation we feel spent and it creates a groove where we get more and more irritated. In our agitated state we live in a constant state of reaction and we usually repent for our actions when we react.
The idea to create a gap between action -reaction. Sage patanjal calls the gap 'Nirodha Sanskara', Shri Tavariaji called in the 'pause'. Our thinking instrument is useless in creating a gap long enough for understanding to flower. The present moment is too fleeting, for understanding to come from the use of thought and reason.
To help us not to react in the present moment but to respond out of understanding, we need this understanding to come from some higher dimension. This understanding then will help us respond to the situation as a whole, and avoid automatic reflex action or reactions. We call this inspiration of the beginning of intuition. As we go deeper intuition grows in to perception and perception to spiritual reading. In this exercise we breathe n then a gap breathe out. Slowly as this training is absorbed by the body brain system we start experiencing higher and higher levels of understanding.
Also, in this living of action -reaction, we are constantly agitation or jerking he emotional body. This scare the emotional body leading to more granthis and negative patterns and at the same time release dangerous chemicals in the body which leads to diseases. By creating a habit of pause we are giving the emotional body a chance to repose / collect itself before reacting. Thus, that reaction, which was just an extension of the agitation, now comes from an inner calmness. In ancient India , the yogis and rishis conducting research in areas beyond the conscious brain had to temporarily put the conscious bran to sleep suspend the thought - forming structure temporarily. By pausing for longer periods and taking in larger amounts of CO2 they could induce trance in the conscious brain and then look beyond.

 GO TO EXERCISE   1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,

REFINING EXERCISE NO 6 - This Exercise Oxygenates the Blood, Adds a little Carbon - Dioxide CO2 into the Blood Stream, and activates the Parasympathetic Nervous System.

Method :
Bundh in the throat : take a deep breath through the nose, close the mouth block both nostrils with the fingers and thumb, press the chin tightly to the hollow of the throat, and swallow five times as in the act of drinking water. Then release the bundh and unblock the nostrails.

Time Limit :
Start with three repetitions, gradually increase by 1 or 2 repetitions every fortnight or longer (Depending on how comfortable the performance feels.)
Until the exercise can be continued for three minutes.

Benefits :
It activates all five sence organs (Sight,Taste,Hearing,Smell and Feel) which are in the face and makes tem more sensitive. It clears the sinuses and takes care of throat and thyroid related problems. The thyroid gland controls combustion of air in breathing and regulatesw heat in the body brain system. The minute parathyroid glands are embedded on th thyroid and they have a wide influence on growth and sex (Balance). The other main fuctin of the thyroid is to produce hormones that ensure that calcium is deposited in the bones and reduced / removed from the blood the four tiny parathyroids are charge of removing calcium from the bones and adding it to the blood. The thyroid also secretes hormones that influence gereral metabolism especially the growth of bones, teeth and the brain. It therefore follows that this exercise ensures the optimum working of these glands and keeps the body away from diseases related to bones, blood, etc. the improper working leads to pathologically nervous , jumpy and over-sensitive type of people, even to very light or mild stimuli. The proper working of the thyroid also ensures and enhances our sensitivity in a positive manner and the proper working of th eparathyroids leads to warm passivity and calmness.
Just above the root of the mouth dangling from the base of the brain, is the pituitary gland, a small organ the size of a cherry stone. It has two parts the anterior and the posterior. The anterior controls the involuntary muscles of the inner instinctive part of the organism, particulary the intestines, bladder, uterusl it also regulates the productivity of milk for suckling in mothers. The posterior deals with the skelatal system, ability to learn abstract thought and capacity for self - control. Yoga says that the brain is powered by the posterior pituitary. It is tempting to refer to the pitutary as one of the master glands because apart from relesing thyroid stimulating hormone (for the proper working of the thyroid) It also regulates the release of hormones from other glands. The pituitary also controls the overall growth of a person and initiates the dramatic changes that take place at puberty. Production of growth hormones slows down and the sex hormons take over therefore , the proper working of this gland ensure proper physical growth. Otherwise the outcome is pituitary dwarfism (short people) or pituitary giantism (or acromegaly - bones increasing in thickness, causing hands, feet and jaw to enlarge; the tongue, liver and kidney also continue to grow) or even precocious ageing.

Emotional :
Now on a different level, this exercise is concered with granthi of plain which forms at the Visuddhi Chakra. As the granthi gets chronice - the pattern gets deeply embedded we feel pain at the slightest instigation in life. We have all lost the capacity to absorb pain because of the granthi. This exeercise dissolves the granthi of pain and we regain the capacity to absorb pain in lifel later on we regain the capacity to create from pain the higher energies for our evolution ( Elsewhere Tavariaji has said …"the proper working of the Vishuddhi takes care of all over-powering weaknesses".)
Our voice box, the larynx, is the throat area; it is from here that we speak or communicate with one another . the throat center is thus connected with the energy of communication.
Shri Tavariaji looked upon yoga as communicatino with different levels of our being and correspondingly with different levels of existence in the universe. By talking too much , we misuse and lose the energy needed for inner communication.
Shri Tavariaji also said that everyone has characteristic vibrational tone. Which would mean that you have particular level of vibration, which is the issence of what you are. This vibratinal tone of a person is reflected in his or her voice. B doing this exercise acquires a tenor and a person. A share doctor can detect how ill a patient is from the quality of his voice. Further, the residual aggressiveness in us lends an edge to our voice, due to which it is unable to sound the undertones or lower harmonics which have their own role to play in the art of communication; this is also a drain on our vital energy. With this practice, we get to employ the sub-harmonics in our voice to effect.
