Yogi Sri Soli Tavaria - An Introduction

The later half of the twentieth century has seen an explosion of science which has woven itself into the fabric of our daily life. For many thousand of years India has been a reservoir of deep spiritual knowledge and teaching. This knowledge has been shared with millions of students who have come to her shores to learn. The basic spiritual truth never changes. But the form given to knowledge and teaching has to change with the time. In our scientific age this form has to be a scientific one together with a scientific approach and method. This would mean reinterpreting the old spiritual texts in the light of modern science.
Sri Tavariaji was a spiritual scientist. In ancient days such a person would have been called a “Maharshi”. He designed simple technique and practical methods which have profound effect on the body, the brain and the emotional structure. These simple breathing exercises work directly on all the systems within our bodybrain structure to bring about total health which would mean a balance between the physical, emotional and mental aspects of the human being. They also have deeper effects on the unseen Yogic anatomy of man, thus leading one to the path of inner evolution. The result is a new person who by breathing a rhythmic breath has brought peace in his relationship to his body and mind, which in turn leads to harmony in his relationship with his fellow human beings and the cosmos at large.Sri Tavariaji met his master, Sri Ram, when he was only seven years old. Over a period of 12 years, he learnt the practices of a very secret Yoga System from his teacher. He said that this system was passed from master to disciples in the Guru-Shisya parampara, originating from Maharshi Patanjali who is credited with the authorship of the Yoga-Sutras.
Sri Tavariaji condensed the system into a few simple exercises together with the Three Step Rhythmic Breath, so that the benefits of such a rich system of Yoga could be easily available to everyone. His teacher advised him to be a householder, so he lived as a family man throughout and is survived by his wife and two children. He said that the real test of Yoga is in a normal family life.
Sri Tavariaji had two engineering degrees and two degrees of Master of Arts.
He had a tremendous control over his body-brain system brought about by Yoga practices. Even though he ate only three meals a week, he was able to lead a normal and very active life.
Sri Tavariaji has written two valuable books:
1) Yoga Sutra - Explanation and Exposition
2) The Purpose of Birth and Death
Moreover, he has left a tremendous amount of notes. He left his physical body at the age of 76.
Sri Tavariaji's simplicity was a kind of living poetry: the way he went about his normal day-to-day acts of life had the beauty, purpose and creativity of a painter spraying his canvas with innumerable colours.
That he was a teacher of the deepest Yogic sciences was hidden in his simple approach to life. And the teaching is so simple, but so complete and scientific. It weaves its way into our daily normal life without upsetting it in the least. And as we continue the practices and the rhythmic breath (as shown in the book) diligently, one day, the transformation happens.
Sri Tavariaji said that every student has his real guide or teacher in himself. If you follow the practices with intensity and regularity as Sri Tavariaji would say, ''as if white hot heat", then one day this inner teacher will reveal himself and guide the student to the very heart of Yoga. It is with this purpose, that a few excerpts of Sri Tavariaji's teachings are given here for interested students. I hope that it will give the student a basic outline and a glimpse of Sri Tavariaji's deeply revealing Yogic science.
3 Step Rhythmic Breathing For Inner Evolution

When I was four years old, I was reciting Gayatri Mantra. Now a Parsi boy from a Parsi orthodox family knows nothing about the Hindu Shastras . When I was seven, I met my Transcendental Master and I have continued at his feet till today. I am very anxious – I told in the group this morning also and I repeat everywhere I go that I want a few dedicated young people who would take from me everything that I would like to pass on. So that they could live a more useful life and in turn they would be able to help others. I have done everything that Yoga practices would require a man to do. I have spent all my life from my age of seven to my present age of seventy-six, doing all sorts of Yoga practices. But I would like to give you few things that will not require more than seven to ten minutes every day and yet will give you all the benefits that long years of Yoga practices can give you.
Before I show you actually what we shall do, I shall tell you why I have selected these few exercises for you. Any physical exercise can be an exercise, but what I am going to show you is not the physical exercise. It will give you total health – physical, mental, emotional and psychic. Because a human being is a complex structure. If one leg of a table is broken, you call a carpenter and he will put it right. If something happens to the human hand or foot, it cannot be set right, the entire biological structure has to be studied because human being is a very complex subject. He or she lives by emotions and emotions are chemicals. The entire human body is a chemical factory and therefore the human emotions are chemicals added thoughtlessly into the system and therefore must give different types of reactions. To take care of our emotions in best way is very important. We are normal human beings. We have to live our normal life. We cannot run away to an ashram or to the Himalayas. We have to look after all obligations that we are shouldered with. I am myself a family man with children, grand children having worked all my life and still I am working.
So, I have brought out from all these mass of Yoga practices only a few Yoga practices that do not require more than seven to ten minutes a day and I am sure that however busy you are, you should be able to find seven to ten minutes a day for which you will get tremendous benefits. These few exercises will take care of your physical body, of your negative emotions, of your mental disorders whatever they be and also psychologically protective. How many young people come to me and say that they suffer from depressions, they can't control their tempers. To control emotions, to control depressions when it comes, we may meet more defeats than success and therefore it is natural that the human beings may feel depressed if one experiences defeats more than once.
Just before the practices I will say that these few exercises are based on a rhythm. This rhythm is not decided or invented arbitrarily. It is not the fancy of one human being. This is the rhythm that is laid down in our shastras. In the days of “Rig-Veda” – one of the oldest shastra, there is a part of Veda that deals with Swar-Nadi shastra . Swar means breath and Nadi means pulse and pulse means health. What is the relationship between pulse and health ? In my seventy-six years never once I have got a headache, never I have got a stomachache, never once I have known a sleepless night, never have I known what is depression! Not because I was always lucky. I have passed through various vicissitude of life. In my normal material life, I have had very hard days to pass, but there has never been a day when I lost my smile, there has never been a day that I lost my sleep, never have been a day that I lost my health. What is the reason? The reason is a particular rhythm that we introduce in our breathing.
This particular rhythm that I am talking to you is Nature's rhythm. You and I were born with this rhythm. This is the rhythm with which every child is born. The child takes thirty-six breaths a minute at particular rhythm for first nine months of the birth and these are the nine months when the child's progress and growth is fastest. In second nine months the child takes eighteen breaths a minute and in the following nine months that means nineteen to twenty-seven months, the child breathes 12 breaths a minute. Then, after twenty-seven months the child becomes intelligent enough to understand the surroundings, perhaps may be seeing the father and mother fighting or the elder sister or elder brother fighting at school, the teacher develops certain fear. Fear is a very bad emotion, may be punished that stays in the mind of the child ad the child feels depressed even when young. All these negative emotions slowly disturb the breathing and then slowly child begins to breathe irregularly. During these twenty-seven months you have seen that child breathes thirty-six breaths a minute, then eighteen and then twelve. But once the breathing is disturbed what happens? Even today in your case what happens? Your breathing is dependent on the emotions and mental state that you may be breathing fourteen breaths in the morning, eighteen in the afternoon, and twenty in the evening. This everything is depending upon what kind of emotions, what kind of mental disturbances you are passing through.
The purpose of good breath and good health is a steady twelve breaths per minute rate. Therefore, all we are doing is, I am not introducing to you anything new. I am taking back to the same breath you have been breathing from your birth to your twenty-seven months and the rhythm is also the same. Only to help you I have tuned the way you will be breathing, so you are going back to Nature. You are not doing anything new. All you are doing is slowing down your breathing from the average eighteen to twenty breaths a minute, you will go down to a regular twelve breaths a minute.
The brain of a man is the most wonderful creation of God in the whole universe. In the whole universe there is nothing like the brain of man. God has created something very spectacular in giving man a brain – the type of brain each human being is given. Science tells us today that in the vast universe there are sixteen billion galaxies. A billion is thousand million that means sixteen thousand millions galaxies. You will be surprised to know that the human brain, that God has given to man and to woman, has sixteen billion cells that mean sixteen thousand million cells. And what is more, each cell is capable of doing ten functions simultaneously! So, now you multiply sixteen thousand million by ten simultaneous processes that your brain can carry out. Fortunately or unfortunately, of this big mass of our brain cells, we are hardly capable of using a few thousand cells. But I do not give importance how many cells you can make use of. The world's greatest scientist Hawkins – I am told that his entire brain is not able to cover one tea spoon. Only that much brain he has got and yet he is the world's greatest scientist! So, it does not matter that how much brain you have got. What is of very great importance is what use you make of this brain.
This brain that God has given you is capable of communication to the end of the universe. It is able to communicate every other living creature on this earth. It is able to communicate with the divine mind of God. You see your powers? You see where you stand? The whole universe is linked to you. What in the Shastra we call the Chitti – the divine mind of God which encircle the whole universe, not only the physical universe but the Shastra says Bhu-Bhuvah-Swaha that is the physical, the molecular and the atomic universe. If you can be in the communication with this Divine mind of God, what can you not do? What ill effects can come in your way? What emotions can depress you? Why should you not have perfect health? It is this communication that is missing. In this few exercises, taking not more than seven to ten minutes, I want to give you a simple secret of communication. Communication – one day will take you to communicate with the divine mind of God – the Chitti. Instead of giving you a long talk I would like to start with practices.

Q.1. There are people who can be classed as ruthless, heartless, seasoned criminals, godless, greedy, over ambitious like Changizkhan, Taimur, Hitler - can 3SRB change these 'types' of people to become saint and good citizens?
A.1. Yes, provided, such people on their own show an inclination to give a fair trial to the programme of 3SRB and having come to twenty-four hours -continue for twelve months more, at first coming to one hour of conscious practice -and continue their interest in 3SRB, they would then unfailingly show tendencies towards spirituality and sainthood!
Q 2. If 3SRB can be enforced on persons by some scientific manipulation using instruments or implanting a needle in the diaphragm and make the diaphragm work as in 3SRB, it should the same results. Then why this talk of yoga - religion - philosophy - morals etc.?
A.2. Answer is No. It is not possible. It cannot give the same results.
Q.3. In the eye is placed an implant, and in the body is inserted a needle and the pacermaker is carried out or even the pacemarker is implanted for art and science has thus obtained very good results. So why not in this case?
A.3. Since it is a vital point it needs a clearer reply. Each human being has created for himself or herself a lure of acceptance in the conscious fore brain through long days of living and thinking in a particular manner based on individual autonomy i.e. what to accept and what to reject.
This false structure is first to be broken down. This cannot be arbitrarily broken down by another person or by some instruments of science, nor by hypnosis.
Such artificial change will appear to function for a short time but will eventually pass away and the old structure will once again prevail. Criminals and such others have a very strong and firm structure of acceptance of their own which is resistant to change.
Q.4. Why not if certain scientific methods and instruments continue operate the Diaphragm?
A.4. Presuming that instruments are embedded in such persons and they work an electronic battery all twenty-four hours it will still be not possible.
As stated earlier such persons must on their own come to the conclusion that trying out the 3SRB programme is worthwhile: then only it is possible.
The 3SRB program: to consciously breath for five minutes daily, increasing by five minutes every fortnight and so to come to one hour of conscious 3SRB. Over a period of six months or more as the individual case may be.
Then only such persons are helped to twenty-four hours of continuous breathing but here too their willing acceptance is necessary. They must at first complete the 3SRB programme as stated earlier.
What happens when a person subjects himself or herself willingly to this discipline? Each individual nerve cell on receiving information, then decides whether or not to pass the message along.
In case of bodily disturbances, it may not hesitate normally, but to change an established breathing habit for an entirely new one and if it does not hesitate and so the whole chain of nerve cells do not hesitate, means there is a sort of acceptance i.e. and inner consent. This is the autonomy of each nerve cell.
This point is very vital; because it is this autonomy which eventually forms the structure for acceptance of an individual and such programme of 3SRB when accepted, decides to break down a wrong structure and in turn to build or fabricate a more correct one.
Anything supposed to be forced on an individual even with scientific instruments for diaphragm movement, against the structure of acceptance will soon erode and pass away e.g. a criminal if subjected to satsang and automatic diaphragm movements through instruments, for some time may appear to be very much changed but sooner or later will find his or her own old ways prevailing.
If a tiger cub is fostered by human beings it will remain vegetarian for sometime till (a) accidentally it tastes human blood one day or (b) gets a call from a tiger! In all cases human or animal, the structure for acceptance will always prevail because it is deep down in the body /brain system and nothing happens for the better till such time this wrong structure is broken down and a better structure is fabricated for better living.
Here we bring in science, "Can human beings be cloned? Human beings are far more complicated than plants or frogs. One difficulty is that mature human cells seem to lose the full genetic potential they had when they were part of an early embryo. A cloned infant will have the same genes as the person who donated the initial cell but it will not grow up to be a copy of the donor because you cannot reproduce the same environment of the donor. That has already become past".
0.5. So far so good, but there must be many ways this structure for acceptance can be broken down, unless you claim that 3 SRB is the only one method to build a more correct structure consciously and break the false structure!
A.5. There are many artificial ways. Monks and nuns of all religious order the world over try in a way to break this wrong structure for acceptance. Millions do try in the hope of Heaven or fear of Hell and perforce some are indoctrinated from early age in some manner.
But no one has tried to fathom what goes on under the surface of these minds. It leads to various disorders of the body/brain system, frustrations, guilt complex, closed minds, great irritations and even silent and mischievous misbehavior and in many cases a life of Dr.Jeckyl and Mr.Hyde and many just exist mechanically like human robots. These are all ruined lives. They will require many lifetimes to be normal again and start allover again; because Nature cannot accept any artificiality in any manner! This 3 SRB can do it in maximum 2-3 years if the individual is willing.
And also there are many other artificial ways of religion, philosophy, yoga and now even in the name of science!
On the other hand anyone who practices 3 SRB program by one's own wish and will or choice without any hope of reward or fear, like in any scientific experiment, then one can experience for one's self. The results in all cases will be positive.
Q.6. Accepting what you have said, what will one see or find after reaching twenty-four hours of 3 SRB carried out for minimum twelve months?
A.6. .The most apparent findings that one can note and/or experience are
(1) improvement in physical, mental, emotional health i.e.; total health.
(2) the turbulence in thought processes will be immensely reduced.
The intensity of the same type of wrong thoughts together with their frequencies will be much reduced before they ultimately cease to disturb the individual.
(1) and (2) are noticeable and can be tried and tested and will show results in all cases and not in a few cases only; because 3 SRB is scientific and has to give the same result; besides the changes for better taking place within biologically, which we do not seem to notice or experience because our awareness is yet not up-graded sufficiently.
Q. 7. Does it mean that higher aspects of 3 SRB suggested here?
A.7 .If yoga, religion, philosophy, theosophy etc. have any claim to bring that about, the shortest and surest way is through 3 SRB.
Q.8. Will you be more specific?
A.8: We as yet do not understand what mind is. "The word mind falls outside the realm of science i.e. mind suggest something too elusive ethereal to be pinned down and some issues including mind/brain questions are really philosophical rather than scientific. As such they may be unresolved".
Science says that brain is in away a computer, but in many ways it is not because "no computer can drastically alter its own programme".
Besides we know today that substances with small molecules including oxygen, alcohol and many anesthetics can cross the brain/blood barrier. "Unfortunately there is no way to observe a living human brain directly".
To explain higher possibilities of 3 SRB we will have to mention what may not be strictly scientific today e.g. what is the purpose of our birth?
(1) "Judgment is the assignment to the disembodied self, of anew body in accordance with its records".
(2) "If a man can arrive there with full knowledge of what he has been and what he wants to be, choice will be open to him". What is this choice?
(3) "During this time (i.e. between death and next birth) the self is bodiless and in this state is able to perceive as real different parts of the cosmos unattainable to it, when attached to a body".
(I) If we can interpret (1) (2) and (3) we find conscious death i.e. self is conscious at the time of fabrication of the fresh bodies for the next birth and so he or she has a choice -i.e. he or she can set aside karma or destiny -"pain which is yet to come can be warded off" says sage Patanjali in Yoga Sutra.
(II) It means also conscious sleep practices which ultimately lead to conscious death practices, and the dimensions of understanding then are very real and which is not possible when the self is within a body.
Phase Exercises

It must be clear that prana rotation in the complete circuit as given below cannot be attempted without preparatory preliminary stages of practices. The reader is referred to a previous book, "Yoga Sutra of Sage Patanjali -- Exposition and Practices", especially phases 5 and 6 in Book V rearranged, for a step-by-step approach leading a sincere student to the point where he can attempt what follows.
The numbering of the chakras/centres is in accord with the diagram in the appendix showing the force centres. Bindu is a dimensionless point but is shown in the diagrams.
Remember always to keep the flame of self-remembrance in the mind's eye constantly -- this flame is the symbol of the Divine Fragment within, in whose presence you are practising. Ask for guidance and help, and practise the entire pathway with full veneration.
So we begin: Rotate prana anticlockwise in muladhara (1) for 1 normal breath, go over to swadhisthana (2) and rotate clockwise in (2) for 1 normal breath, and return to (1); repeat this procedure for 24 normal breaths (2 minutes), -- take 1 normal breath to reach manipura (4) and rotate anticlockwise in manipura for 12 normal breaths (one minute),-- take 1 normal breath to reach anahata (5) and rotate clockwise (two rotations, left and right halves) in anahata for 12 normal breaths (one minute),-- take 1 normal breath to reach vishuddhi (6) and rotate clockwise (two rotations, posterior and anterior halves) in vishuddhi for 12 normal breaths (one minute),-- take 1 normal breath to reach taluka (0) and rotate anticlockwise in taluka for 12 normal breaths (one minute), -- take 1 normal breath to reach sahasrara (8) and rotate anticlockwise in sahasrara for 12 normal breaths (one minute); then-- proceed to bindu (9) in one normal breath and rotate clockwise in bindu
for 12 normal breaths (one minute),-- proceed to ajna (7) in one normal breath and rotate clockwise in ajna for 12 normal breaths (one minute),-- proceed to vishuddhi (6) (via bindu, sahasrara and taluka) in 1 normal breath and rotate clockwise (a single rotation only) in vishuddhi for 12 normal breaths (one minute), -- proceed to anahata (5) in 1 normal breath and rotate clockwise (a single rotation only) in anahata for 12 normal breaths (one minute),
-- proceed to kundali (3) in 1 normal breath and rotate clockwise in kundali for 12 normal breaths (one minute), and -- come down to muladhara-swadhisthana (12) in 1 normal breath.
This completes one full cycle of the pathway requiring about 13 minutes. It may be performed not more than twice a week. After three months of practice, the time for completion of one circuit should be brought down to 12 normal breaths or one minute: one breath to cover (12), one breath each to reach and complete each of the centres in order on the upward and downward journeys, ending at (12) again. The entire circuit is to be practised in this manner for an additional three months. This much is to
be done consciously.
Thereafter, much will depend on the individual's determination to increase further the speed of traversing the circuit. But only the divine grace of Ishvara will make it happen! Sutra II(52), which says, "Through this, that which veils the Light is gradually removed," must be experienced and is most essential. Nothing should be practised unless inner vision and luminosity has set in.
